Arc5 verdict: who should buy it
The closest-cutting shaver you can buy without paying flagship money. Five blades and a fast linear motor make short work of dense, fast-growing beards, though it's less forgiving than the Braun if your skin reacts easily.
Best for
- Dark, coarse beards that are back by dinner
- Men who want closeness above everything
- Frequent flyers (worldwide voltage)
Look elsewhere if
- Your skin is very sensitive: Philips Norelco Shaver 7800
- You often let it grow 5 days or more: Braun Series 9 Pro+ (9517s)
- You want a cleaning station in the box: Braun Series 8 (8567cc)
Why it ranks #3 of 17
Panasonic's linear motor runs fast enough that hair gets cut before it has time to bend away from the foil. The five-blade head flexes in 16 directions, and a sensor checks beard density 220 times a second and nudges the power to match. Put simply: coarse stubble that grows back in a day is exactly what this shaver was built for.
It earned a Shaver Notes score of 8.7/10 and the "Closest shave on thick beards" spot on the best electric shavers for men list.
What the Arc5 does well
- Very close finish on thick, coarse beards
- Quick; two or three minutes is enough for most faces
- Pop-up trimmer for sideburns and mustache edges
- Cheaper heads than Braun's flagship
Arc5 problems and things to know before you buy
- The foil is thin and sharp. Sensitive skin often needs two to three weeks to settle.
- Runtime is shorter than the Braun and Philips flagships, about 45 minutes.
- Older 'best of' lists push the Arc6. Reviewers who used both found the gap small for the price jump.
- Buy the complete WES9032P set, not the separate parts. The set bundles the outer foil and the inner blade and routinely sells at about half its list price, which makes it cheaper than the WES9173P outer foil bought on its own. The separate parts only make sense if you are replacing one of them off-schedule.
What owners keep saying
Men with heavy beards love it, and plenty call it the closest electric shave they've had. Less happy reviews tend to come from men with sensitive necks who pressed hard in the first week. Light pressure is the whole trick with this one.

Model numbers and versions explained
The Arc5 has been sold in several boxes for years. ES-LV65 and ES-LV67 are shaver-only, ES-LV95 and ES-LV97 add the cleaning station, and ES-ALV6HS is a newer silver edition. The cutting system is the same across them. The Arc6 (ES-LS8A, ES-LS9A) adds a sixth blade at a much higher price.

Running cost: heads and cleaning
Replacement part: Panasonic WES9032P foil + inner blade set, about every 12 months. Rinse under hot water with the motor running, then let it dry open. Panasonic suggests a new foil every year and new inner blades every two years; the WES9032P set covers both at once. The Panasonic cleaning packet (LV97 station only) adds roughly $4 a month if you use it.
Rough 5-year cost including heads: about $490 at a $$$ street price (estimate). Run your own numbers in the 5-year calculator. Check head price

Arc5 FAQ
Is the Panasonic Arc5 worth it in 2026?
Yes, if your beard is dense and closeness matters most. It's still the value pick among five-blade foils. With very sensitive skin, look at the Braun Series 9 Pro+ or Philips 7800 first.
What are the common Panasonic Arc5 problems?
Irritation in the first weeks, foil damage if it's dropped, and a shorter runtime than rivals. The motor has a long, good track record.
Panasonic Arc5 vs Arc6: is six blades better?
The Arc6 adds a blade and two slit trimmers and costs far more. For most beards the Arc5 lands very close to it.
Where can I buy the Arc5?
It is sold on Amazon. This page links directly to the listing (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W7XK55Q?tag=best-electric-shavers807-20); the price and stock shown there apply.
