Short answer

Buy the Arc5 unless your beard is genuinely coarse and you shave most days. The Arc6 adds a sixth blade, a faster motor and a head that moves in 22 directions, and on dense stubble it does clear the job in fewer strokes. But it costs more than twice as much to buy, about twice as much to re-blade, and its average owner rating is lower than the cheaper shaver's. The Arc6 is the better shaver. The Arc5 is the better buy.

Category wins in the table below: Arc5 4, Arc6 5, the rest a tie.

The details that decide it

What the sixth blade actually does

Panasonic's six-blade head is not simply the five-blade head plus one. Two of the six are dedicated to thick stubble and are titanium-coated, two lift hair and two finish it. Paired with a motor quoted at 84,000 cross-cutting actions a minute and a head that moves in 22 directions rather than pivoting on one axis, the practical effect on a coarse beard is that you stop retracing the same patch. On a medium beard that advantage largely disappears, because the Arc5 was already clearing it in one pass.

The owner-rating gap is the part worth pausing on

The Arc6 is the newer, more expensive, more advanced shaver, and it carries the lower average owner score of the two. That is unusual and it is not noise: the Arc5 has thousands of ratings behind its average and the Arc6 a few hundred behind its own. Reading through the critical reviews, two themes do most of the damage, and neither is about the shave. One is the price next to the Arc5 sitting on the same page. The other is the size of the head around the mouth and nose. If either of those would bother you, they will bother you after you have paid.

What each one costs to keep running

This is where the gap widens rather than closes. Both makers' schedules put a foil replacement at roughly 18 months, but the Arc6's WES9600P set costs about double the Arc5's WES9032P. Add that to a purchase price more than twice as high and, over five years, the Arc6 is not a slightly more expensive shaver; it is a different budget. Put both into the cost calculator on the home page with today's prices before you decide.

A note on fake Arc6 listings

The Arc6 attracts clone listings more than any other shaver covered here, because the real one is expensive. If you see a six-blade “ARC6” for a fraction of Panasonic's price, check the Brand field rather than the title, and treat a hyphen dropped into the brand name as the tell it is. The same goes for the WES9600P foil set.

Who should skip both

If your neck hair grows in swirls or your skin reacts to foils, both Panasonics are the wrong tool. A Philips Norelco rotary such as the 7800 is far gentler, and it costs less than either.

Panasonic Arc5 (ES-LV67)

  • The foil is thin and sharp. Sensitive skin often needs two to three weeks to settle.
  • Runtime is shorter than the Braun and Philips flagships, about 45 minutes.
  • Older 'best of' lists push the Arc6. Reviewers who used both found the gap small for the price jump.
  • Buy the complete WES9032P set, not the separate parts. The set bundles the outer foil and the inner blade and routinely sells at about half its list price, which makes it cheaper than the WES9173P outer foil bought on its own. The separate parts only make sense if you are replacing one of them off-schedule.

Other versions on Amazon:

Panasonic Arc6 (ES-LS8A-K)

  • The ES-LS8A-K has no cleaning station. The ES-LS9A-K is the same shaver with one, for roughly $100 more.
  • The WES9600P foil set costs about double a Braun Series 5 head. Over five years that is the real price of owning this shaver.
  • The head is large. Men who already struggle to get under the nose with an Arc5 will struggle more here, and the pop-up trimmer stops being optional.
  • Panasonic sells this as the Series 900+ in Europe and the Lamdash 6 PRO in Japan. The Japanese revisions aren't identical on paper but shave the same.

FAQ

Is the Panasonic Arc6 worth it over the Arc5?

For most beards, no. The Arc6 clears dense stubble in fewer strokes, but it costs more than twice as much to buy and about twice as much to re-blade, and owners rate it lower on average. Buy it if your beard is coarse and you shave daily.

Is the Arc6 closer than the Arc5?

On dense, coarse stubble, yes, and it gets there in fewer passes. On a medium beard the difference is small enough that most men would not pick it out blind.

Can I use Arc5 blades in an Arc6?

No. The Arc5 uses the WES9032P foil and blade set and the Arc6 uses the WES9600P. They are not interchangeable, and that difference is part of the running-cost gap.

Is the Arc6 the same shaver as the Panasonic Series 900+ or the Lamdash 6?

Panasonic sells it as the Series 900+ in Europe and the Lamdash 6 PRO in Japan. The Japanese revisions aren't identical on paper but shave the same.

Does the Arc6 come with a cleaning station?

The ES-LS8A-K doesn't. The ES-LS9A-K is the same shaver with a station, for more money.
