Short answer

Buy the Series 9 Pro+ if you let stubble grow three days or more, or you want the fastest Braun. Buy the Series 8 if you shave daily, have an angular face or smaller hands, and want a cleaning station in the box for less. On short stubble the finish is close to identical.

Category wins in the table below: Series 8 4, Series 9 Pro+ 1, the rest a tie.

The details that decide it

Speed vs reach

The Series 9 Pro+ carries an extra trimming element and a ProLift-style trimmer for flat hairs. The Series 8 makes up for it with a smaller head you can steer more easily.

Which costs less to own

The 83M head is cheaper than the 94M, and both are replaced about every 18 months. If you use the station, cartridges cost the same.

The station decision

The Series 8 8567cc includes the 5-in-1 SmartCare Center, which cleans, lubricates, dries and charges the shaver at one button press. It runs on Clean & Renew cartridges, so it is also a running cost. The Series 9 Pro+ 9517s comes with a plain charging stand. If you don't want cartridges at all, the Series 8 8517s is the same shaver with a plain stand.

Hand size and handling

The Series 9 Pro+ handle is chunky. If your hands are on the small side, hold a Series 8 before deciding, because the slimmer body and narrower head are easier to steer around the chin and under the nose.

Battery and water

There is no difference here worth paying for. Both run about 60 minutes on a charge, both are fully waterproof and both heads swivel about 40 degrees.

Who should skip both

If foils have ever given you razor burn, neither Braun changes that; try a Philips Norelco rotary. And if you shave every day with no sensitivity, the Braun Series 7 gives a close Braun shave for much less than either of these.

Other versions on Amazon:

Braun Series 9 Pro+ (9517s)

  • The 94M head is one of the more expensive replacement parts in the category. Budget for one every 18 months.
  • The handle is chunky. If your hands are small, hold a Series 8 in a store before deciding.

FAQ

Is Braun Series 9 better than Series 8?

Faster on long growth, similar on short stubble.

Should I upgrade from Series 8 to Series 9 Pro+?

Only if you regularly shave 3-day growth or your Series 8 is worn out.

Do the Series 8 and Series 9 Pro+ use the same replacement head?

No. The Series 8 uses the 83M cassette and the Series 9 Pro+ (94xx and 95xx models) uses the 94M. Check the code on your current head before you order.

Is the Braun cleaning station worth it?

It is convenient, and the shaver is always charged and lubricated. The cartridges are an ongoing cost, though. Rinsing under hot water with the motor running, plus a drop of light oil on the foil every week or two, does the job too.

Which is better for a short daily shave?

On one-day stubble the finish is very close to identical. The Series 8 gets you there for less and includes the station in the 8567cc box.
