i9000 Prestige Ultra verdict: who should buy it
The rotary to buy if your neck hair grows in every direction or a foil leaves you red. For most skin it's the most comfortable shaver on this list, and the closeness gap to the best foils is smaller than it used to be.
Best for
- Swirly neck growth and the area under the jaw
- Sensitive skin that reacts to foil shavers
- Men upgrading from an older Norelco
Look elsewhere if
- You want the tightest possible 1-day finish: Braun Series 9 Pro+ (9517s)
- You want most of this comfort for far less money: Philips Norelco Shaver 7800
- You mainly trim stubble rather than shave clean: Philips Norelco OneBlade Pro 360
Why it ranks #2 of 17
Three rotary heads spin in full circles, so they catch hairs whichever way they point. That's why rotary shavers usually win on the neck. The Ultra runs Philips' fastest cutter, a lift-and-cut blade that raises each hair before slicing it, and a pressure light that tells you when you're pushing too hard. That light is the feature I'd pay for. Too much pressure causes most of the irritation people blame on the shaver.
It earned a Shaver Notes score of 8.8/10 and the "Best rotary, most comfortable" spot on the best electric shavers for men list.
What the i9000 Prestige Ultra does well
- Very good on multi-directional neck growth
- Pressure guidance trains a lighter hand within days
- Pod, stand, trimmer and hard case come in the box
- Self-sharpening blades rated for about two years
i9000 Prestige Ultra problems and things to know before you buy
- Rotary heads are wider, so sideburn edges and the spot under the nose need the click-on trimmer.
- The Bluetooth app is optional. You don't need it to get a good shave.
- The plain i9000 Prestige and older S9000 Prestige use a very similar head and often cost less.
What owners keep saying
Owners mention comfort before anything else. The repeated wish is a slightly tighter finish on one-day stubble compared with a Braun foil. Men coming from an older Norelco tend to be the happiest buyers.

Model numbers and versions explained
Philips names are a maze. S9000 Prestige (SP98xx) is the older flagship. i9000 Prestige (XP92xx) added SenseIQ and the app. i9000 Prestige Ultra (XP94xx) is the current top model with the faster cutting system. Outside North America the same shavers carry the Philips name and Series 9000 or Prestige badges with different codes.

Running cost: heads and cleaning
Replacement part: Philips 9000 Prestige-family heads (match the code under your head), about every 24 months. Flip the head open and rinse after each shave, or drop it in the Quick Clean Pod a couple of times a week. One cartridge covers roughly three months of normal use. The Quick Clean Pod cartridge adds roughly $3 a month if you use it.
Rough 5-year cost including heads: about $390 at a $$$$ street price (estimate). Run your own numbers in the 5-year calculator. Check head price

i9000 Prestige Ultra FAQ
Is the Philips Norelco i9000 Prestige Ultra worth it?
For sensitive skin, swirly neck growth or a move up from an older Norelco, yes. If your skin is tough and you want the closest cut, a Braun Series 9 Pro+ or Panasonic Arc5 will feel closer.
i9000 Prestige vs Prestige Ultra: what's the difference?
The Ultra gets the faster 165,000-action cutter, SenseIQ Pro with five modes and live pressure feedback, and a longer warranty. The standard Prestige is close behind and is often discounted.
What are the common Philips i9000 problems?
Price, an app that's more novelty than necessity, and a slower finish around the mustache. Reliability reports are good.
